Understanding Your Out-of-Network Insurance Benefits
I operate as an out-of-network provider to guarantee complete clinical independence so that we can help you or your child start to thrive. I come to every session entirely focused on your growth.
While I do not accept insurance directly at the time of service, practicing out-of-network does not mean you cannot use your insurance benefits. In fact, many people are surprised by just how robust their out-of-network mental health coverage actually is.
Every month, I provide you with a specialized clinical receipt called a Superbill. You submit this document directly to your insurance company, and depending on your specific plan, they may send you a check for a significant partial reimbursement. I will guide you step-by-step on how to unlock these direct reimbursements.
Why Choose an Out-of-Network Therapist?
Choosing to work out-of-network is a deliberate choice that protects the integrity and privacy of your care. For many families—especially those navigating the sensitive late high school, college, and post-grad years—there are two primary advantages to this model:
Absolute Privacy: To approve an insurance claim, insurance companies require a formal, permanent psychiatric diagnosis. They also reserve the right to audit your clinical files, meaning details about your or your child's struggles become part of a corporate medical record. Keeping insurance companies out of the loop ensures that your personal information stays exactly where it belongs: strictly confidential between us.
Clinical Freedom: When an insurance company pays for therapy, they have a vested interest your care looks. They have influence over how many sessions you are allowed to have, how long those sessions can be, and what type of treatment is permitted. Operating independently guarantees that our work is driven entirely by what you or your child actually need to get unstuck—not by what a corporate claims adjuster deems profitable.
But Use Your Insurance if You Have It and Feel Good About It!: By all means, use your Out of Network benefits. They’re ultimately there for you and your child’s well-being. And if you’re not sure about using your benefits I highly recommend calling your insurance company. Here’s how to do it: turn over your insurance card and look for an 800 numbers specific to behavioral health benefits. Call the number and say this:
“I’m considering starting therapy with a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who is an Out of Network provider. Can you walk me through what my benefits are in that case, how I would access those benefits and what steps I would need to take to receive reimbursement for my out-of-pocket expenses”
